Senior Process Development Engineer
Los Angeles, CA
Mesh Optical Technologies was founded on the belief that photons will unlock the next evolution of human technology. Today, we're putting that vision into practice by developing the world's most advanced optical computing hardware.
We believe in engineering to the limit of physics, building our own factories, and writing software that maximizes the capability of our hardware. As we embark on this journey, we're seeking an expert Semiconductor Process Engineer who is motivated by our goal to operate the highest volume optical manufacturing facility in North America.
As our Senior Process Engineer, you'll play a critical role in the development and launch of our first product:
Optical Interconnects — High-bandwidth optical interconnects are fundamental to the future of computing. Their assembly requires wafer-level bonding, flip-chip attach, eutectic soldering, and under-fill processes that achieve ≥ 99.9 % yield while surviving thousands of thermal cycles. You'll invent, optimize, and qualify those recipes, then transfer them onto our production floor.
What you'll do
- Own development of wafer-level and die-level packaging processes: eutectic AuSn bonding, Cu/SnAg bump-to-pad flip-chip, under-fill, and conformal coating.
- Push bond yield above ≥ 99.9 % and thermal-cycle reliability beyond 20,000 cycles.
- Characterize interfaces with X-ray, SAM, TEM/SEM, CSAM, and high-temperature shear testing, closing the loop with electrical, mechanical, and photonic circuit design teams.
- Drive tool selection, recipe development, and statistical process control limits to transfer processes from R&D to volume production.
- Act as the technical owner for failure-analysis findings and corrective actions.
- Provide technical mentorship and interview candidates as we work to build up high-volume semiconductor packaging know-how in the US.
Basic Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar.
- Extensive hands-on semiconductor process-development experience.
- Demonstrated success qualifying high yield flip-chip, eutectic, thermo-compression, or hybrid bonding.
- Deep expertise in statistical quality control and process improvement methodologies, with experience leading internal audits and driving continuous improvement.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nanofabrication background (e-beam lithography, dry etch, PECVD, CMP).
- Experience integrating photonic devices (SiPh, InP) into complex opto-electronic packages.
Compensation and benefits
- Competitive cash salary commensurate with experience and merit.
- Eligibility for long-term incentives including company stock options and discretionary bonuses awarded for exceptional achievements.
- Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Paid parental leave and flexible PTO (3 weeks vacation + 10 company holidays).
- Relocation assistance to sunny Los Angeles.
