Photonic Integrated Circuit Designer
Los Angeles, CA
Mesh Optical Technologies was founded on the belief that photons will unlock the next evolution of human technology. Today, we're putting that vision into practice by developing the world's most advanced optical computing hardware.
We believe in engineering to the limit of physics, building our own factories, and writing software that maximizes the capability of our hardware. As we embark on this journey, we're seeking a Photonic Integrated Circuit Designer who is motivated by our goal to develop the highest volume optical manufacturing facility in North America.
As our Process Engineer, you'll play a critical role in the development and launch of our first product:
Optical Interconnects — High-bandwidth optical interconnects are fundamental to the future of computing. You will own the core photonic chip: translating system-level link budgets into silicon layouts, driving tape-outs through leading foundries, and working side-by-side with test and manufacturing teams to dial in performance, yield, and reliability as we ramp from prototypes to high-volume production.
What you'll do
- Design next-generation silicon-photonics integrated circuits.
- Leverage, and when necessary, extend foundry PDKs by adding custom compact models, layout cells, and verification decks for novel devices.
- Run electromagnetic / finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations for waveguides, grating/edge couplers, mode converters, interferometers, and modulators—validating loss, bandwidth, and phase response before tape-out.
- Develop test plans, automated wafer-level probing, and bench setups to close the model-to-measurement loop.
- Collaborate with packaging, electrical, and software teams to co-optimize link budgets, thermal design, and control loops.
- Provide technical mentorship and interview candidates as we work to build up a world class photonic integrated circuit design team.
Basic Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Optics/Photonics.
- Extensive professional PIC design experience with at least one tape-out in production.
- Proficiency with photonic layout tools and electromagnetic solvers.
- Familiarity with high-speed driver/receiver circuits and optical link characterization.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with coherent Tx/Rx, SOA/EDFA integration, or LiNbO₃ thin-film modulators.
- Knowledge of control firmware (Python or C++) for thermo-optic and electro-optic tuning.
Compensation and benefits
- Competitive cash salary commensurate with experience and merit.
- Eligibility for long-term incentives including company stock options and discretionary bonuses awarded for exceptional achievements.
- Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Paid parental leave and flexible PTO (3 weeks vacation + 10 company holidays).
- Relocation assistance to sunny Los Angeles.
