Lead Mechanical Engineer
Los Angeles, CA
Mesh Optical Technologies was founded on the belief that photons will unlock the next evolution of human technology. Today, we're putting that vision into practice by developing the world's most advanced optical computing hardware.
We believe in engineering to the limit of physics, building our own factories, and writing software that maximizes the capability of our hardware. As we embark on this journey, we're seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer who is motivated by our goal to operate the highest volume optical manufacturing facility in North America.
As our Lead Mechanical Engineer, you'll play a critical role in the development and launch of our first product:
Optical Interconnects — High-bandwidth optical interconnects are fundamental to the future of computing. Building them at scale demands a production line that flawlessly executes wafer-level bonding, flip-chip attach, eutectic reflow, under-fill, and rigorous automated inspection. As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you'll architect that line end-to-end: spec the tools, model takt-times, bring the equipment online, and drive it to high-uptime, high-volume output.
What you'll do
- Architect, model, and commission our transceiver production line—tool layout, takt-time modeling, ergonomics, and full 3-D facility CAD.
- Specify capital equipment (die-bond, flip-chip, wire-bond, AOI, burn-in, environmental test) and own vendor relationships through procurement.
- Build digital twins of stations for throughput trade studies; implement poka-yoke fixtures and automated test coverage for end of line software load and optical bit error rate testing.
- Develop and enforce design rules that shorten build time.
- Lead root-cause analysis for any downtime.
- Own various aspects of the production line: first pass yield, maintenance schedules, and cost targets.
Basic Qualifications
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Extensive experience owning high-volume electrical or optical manufacturing lines.
- Expert-level CAD proficiency; able to release complete drawing packages with GD&T and tolerance stacks.
- Experience developing production lines that involve interaction with PLCs, robotics integration, and process/materials traceability.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- A clear supplier-of-last-resort mentality: you can machine, wire, solder, and write quick Python scripts when the line needs it.
Compensation and benefits
- Competitive cash salary commensurate with experience and merit.
- Eligibility for long-term incentives including company stock options and discretionary bonuses awarded for exceptional achievements.
- Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Paid parental leave and flexible PTO (3 weeks vacation + 10 company holidays).
- Relocation assistance to sunny Los Angeles.
